Where Unclaimed Funds Come From

Money ends up with the State when a company loses track of you — a move, a name change, a closed account, a death in the family. It almost always starts as something ordinary:

Forgotten bank and credit union accounts
Uncashed checks — payroll, refunds, dividends, settlements
Life insurance proceeds
Utility deposits and rent security deposits
Escrow and closing balances from a property sale
Estates and inheritances that were never fully distributed
Business transactions that never fully closed

After a set period with no contact, the holder is required by law to turn that money over to the State Comptroller, where it sits until someone claims it. It does not expire. It is still yours — no matter how many years have passed.

Most unclaimed funds claims that fail don't fail because the money wasn't there. They fail over a missing signature, a mismatched middle initial, or a document that wasn't notarized correctly.

That is why every claim I handle moves through the same five steps:

Initial verification of name, address history, and claim indicators
Documentation review for completeness
Internal accuracy check against State requirements
Notarization when required — I bring a mobile notary to you
Final personal review before submission to New York State

> What It Costs (and When)

15% of what is actually recovered. Nothing else, ever.

Fifteen percent is the maximum a finder may charge under New York State law (Abandoned Property Law §1416), and it is only collected after the State has issued your check.

That structure is deliberate. I do not get paid unless you do, which means I have every reason to make sure your claim is complete, accurate, and approved.

> Why the Paperwork Comes First

This is the question I get most often, so here is the straight answer.

New York State allows you to search for and claim your own funds directly, for free, through the Office of the State Comptroller. I will never pretend otherwise.

What I provide is the part that takes time and expertise: locating the account, matching it to you, assembling the documentation, and shepherding it through the State's requirements. Once I disclose the specific account details, that work is done and anyone could file on it.

So a NYS-compliant finder agreement is signed before specific claim details are shared. It is standard industry practice, it is fully permitted under State law, and it protects the work already performed on your behalf. You are free to walk away before signing anything.

> How You Get Paid

The money never passes through my hands as a payout to me first. Here is the actual sequence:

Your claim is processed by the New York State Office of the State Comptroller
The State issues the check — not me, not a third party
The check is made payable directly to you, in your name
For tracking and security, it is mailed to my business address
We connect, you receive your check, and the 15% fee is settled at that time

> How to Verify Me Before We Talk

You should never take a stranger's word about your money. Verify me first — it takes about two minutes.

Look up my corporation. Search Variato, Inc. in the New York Department of State's Corporation and Business Entity Database at apps.dos.ny.gov/publicInquiry. You'll see that the company has been registered and operating in New York State since 2008.
Or call the State directly. The NYS Department of State, Division of Corporations will confirm entity information by phone at (518) 473-2492, Monday–Friday, 8:45 AM–4:30 PM.
A note on the name: Sundahl Digital is a DBA registered in 2026 under Variato, Inc. I added it so my own name — Greg Sundahl — is attached to the business people are trusting. The corporation behind it is not new.
